TOPAS® cyclic olefin copolymer, or COC, is an incredibly pure polymer – in fact, it’s purer than most grades of medical glass. And when it comes to maintaining purity, TOPAS medical grade plastics can be sterilized via all common methods. Leachables and extractables are extremely low. Many classes of polymers are sensitive to moisture, meaning that when humidity changes, parts may undergo subtle shifts in dimension and other properties. The family of TOPAS® COC medical plastics includes grades with heat resistance up to 170C. In healthcare applications, temperature resistance is often important for steam sterilization of devices. Most TOPAS® COC customers injection mold their UV transparent parts. In some cases, where a flexible product is desired, parts are assembled from flexible films made from TOPAS® COC by our customers. Developmental parts can also be machined from plaques or other stock shapes.

While TOPAS® COC is highly transparent to UV, it is not particularly resistant to long-term UV exposure because UV stabilizers reduce ultraviolet transmission. We have optimized our highest transmission medical polymer grade for the best available UV transparency by eliminating UV stabilizers, and thus, we do not recommend use in repeat sterilization or other long-term UV exposure applications. Single UV cycle applications such as diagnostics and analytical testing are our specialty, and TOPAS® COC medical grade polymer is the healthcare industry’s top choice for these uses.
