In a recent online edition of Medical Design Technology, an article by Trey Shoop of TOPAS Advanced Polymers provided an excellent overview of the impact TOPAS COC is having on the design of microfluidic devices and disposables. By working with TOPAS plastics from the earliest development stages onward to full commercial production, design is simplified and development time minimized. An entire ecosystem has arisen for the use of TOPAS COC in microfluidics, ranging from 3D printing equipment for design and prototyping to injection molders who specialize in the precise details needed for consistent microfluidic performance. TOPAS medical grade polymers can be used in common microfluidic development processes including hot embossing, soft lithography, casting, laser ablation, and photolithography. These cycloolefin resins deliver a range of properties ideal for microfluidics, including high optical clarity, low water absorption, exceptional moisture and chemical barrier, and excellent resistance to chemicals, including leading organic solvents used in chemical analysis. TOPAS plastics also feature the best UV transmission of any polymer, detail replication capability down to the submicron level, high dimensional stability, and low autofluorescence.
