The addition of TOPAS® COC 9506F-500 increased the seal strength of LLDPE and Plastomer sealant layers in a study that evaluated 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% loadings of 9506F-500 into LLDPE and Plastomer cast films. The addition of 9506F-500 increased the seal initiation temperature in LLDPE by about 5°C, as measured by the temperature at which the seal strength reached 20N. In plastomer, the seal initiation temperature was only affected when the amount of COC added was 30%.
The seal strength of LLDPE doubled by adding 30% 9506F-500. The seal strength of the Plastomer film increased by 25% by adding 30% 9506F-500. Note that the seal strength of the Plastomer is about 50% higher than the LLDPE, which explains why the increase from adding COC to Plastomer is reduced.

The increased seal strength from adding 9506F-500 to the seal layer makes it an excellent option to improve the seal performance in recyclable film structures. Polyethylene films that use a total of 20% or less TOPAS® COC have been approved to be recycled by the Association of Plastics Recyclers.
